Living all alone in his castle, Maestro [Michael Jackson] has been a thorn in the flesh of the people of Normal Valley for a long time. Led by the Major [also played by Michael Jackson] of the town, the inhabitants set off to Maestro's castle, where they believe him to be living all alone, to drive him away from Normal Valley... but he's not alone... Meet the family!
Michael Jackson's 40 minute short musical film is an event in itself. Critics praised the skill Michael exhibited by playing all the lead characters with diverse looks and voices and the special effects in "Ghosts" which set new standards.

The video clip is starring Michael Jackson.
The shooting of the video clip took place in an unused hangar in Van Nuys [CA, U.S.A.]. A short time before, Michael Jackson's movie "Ghosts" was filmed at that very same location.
Remarkable about the clip is that all the scenes viewers will get to see are in slow-motion with the exception of Michael's. This technique enabled the clip's director to capture the feeling of loneliness perfectly.
Michael's make-up was created by Karen Faye.

The video clip is starring Michael Jackson.
The shooting of this second "They Don't Care About Us" video clip, the so-called "Prison Version", took place in a studio in New York.
The video clip contains relatively violent, true-to-life images [Rodney King beating, Los Angeles riots, China's military shooting on a mass demonstration for democracy in Beijing, Vietnam war etc.]. MTV and many other TV stations banned the video clip from their programs, other music channels aired the clip only late-nights.

The World première of the video clip took place on March 22, 1996 on many TV channels throughout the world with the exception of the U.S.A.
The video clip is starring Michael Jackson and co-starring Olodum [200 member percussion group].
The shooting of the video clip took place in Dona Marta, a shantytown south of Rio de Janeiro [Brazil] and downtown Bahia, Pelourinho [Brazil].
Even before commencement of filming, the video clip hit headlines all around the world. Certain politicians were concerned that Michael Jackson's video would tarnish the image of the city - candidate for the Olympic Games of 2004 - by showing the world the true story of the misery that reigns in Rio's shantytowns.
The governor of Rio, faced with the perceived threat of the video, simply decided to forbid Spike Lee and Michael Jackson to film anything whatsoever in this city. The decree was, however, quickly struck down by a government official who said that "it would be worse for international opinion to censure the shoot than to show the reality of the shantytowns".
Over 150 policemen secured the area as the filming was being done.
There are two video versions of "They Don't Care About Us" - both directed by Spike Lee. The "Prison" version and the "Brazilian" version. The prison version was released after the Brazilian version because reportedly Michael was not entireley satisfied with the result of the first clip.
Michael's make-up was created by Karen Faye.
The full-length video clip version - just over 7 minutes long, can be found on "HIStory On Film - Volume II".

"Earth Song" is considered one of the best video clips Michael Jackson has ever done. The clip's entire theme, the eschatalogical mood and its message... an absolutely phenomenal short film!
The shooting of the video clip took place on four continents:
The Amazon Rainforest [footage incl. natives to the region].
Croatia [shot in the war zone with residents of the area].
Tanzania [footage incl. Masai and their own village]. While filming was in progress an African elephant [not pictured in the video!] was killed by poachers within miles of the shoot.
New York [forest fire scenes were created on a 6 acre outdoor set in a corn field in Warwick, New York]. The shooting of the footage ocurred within the same week as thousands of acres of forest on Long Island and New Jersey were destroyed due to arson.

On March 31, 1993 following Michael's a cappella rendition of "Who Is It" during the Oprah interview, US radio stations are swamped with requests for the single. The World première of the video clip took place on November 14, 1991 and was broadcast simultaneously in 27 countries with an estimated audience of 500 million people. It was the largest audience ever to view a music video!
The video clip is starring Michael Jackson, Macauley Culkin, Michael's niece Brandi, Bart and Homer Simpson and George Wendt [who played Norm in "Cheers"].
Only hours after its première, "Black Or White" was in the TV News around the world. The première of the video was immediately followed by uproar regarding the video's somewhat violent final segment [Panther Scene], which caused widespread controversy. Parents in particular were disturbed by the violence and sex enacted by Michael breaking windows and simulating masturbation. Michael's publicist said that Michael's dance sequence is meant to portray Jackson's interpretation of the panther's wild and animalistic behavior. Michael agreed to edit out the final 4 minutes of the video, and issued a statement.
But the video was not only a spectacle because of the "Panther Scenes" but also because it was the first music video ever to use the so called "Morphing" Special Effects. This revolutionary technique was used in only 2 movies ["Willow", "Terminator 2"], but never before in music videos.
There are two versions of the last sequence of the video - "Panther" part: the first version incl. the "racist graffity sprayings" on the car as well as on the window of a building; and the second version where those "graffity parts" had been edited out.
Responsible for the choreography are Michael Jackson and Vincent Paterson. Panther Sequences choreographed by Michael Jackson.
Video clip produced by Reid Shane. Directed by: John Landis [1991]
