with Rita Cosby - Fox News
Rita Cosby: "And up next, a Fox Wire Exclusive with the angry King Of Pop. Why is Michael Jackson taking on the head of a major corporation? He'll tell us why in a rare interview. Stay tuned for Michael Jackson, that's coming right up."
Michael Jackson: "We must put an end to this racism. Racism is bad. Tommy Mottola made some very racist remarks. What he said was-- to one of the artists who work at uh... Sony... he has a contract... uh with the company... and um… he called him a fat black nigger."
Rita Cosby: "Some fireworks today - of course today Tommy Mottola is the head of Sony Corporation. Multiplatinum singer, Michael Jackson is feuding with Sony and Tommy Mottola. Sony is of course his big name record company. At a speech and rally with Reverend Al Sharpton in Harlem today, the Gloved Wonder charged that the recording industry was a racist conspiracy that turned profits at the expense of performers. Particularly minority artists. Rev. Sharpton has recently formed a coalition to investigate whether some artists are financially exploited. Right after his speech, I spoke briefly to the King Of Pop for a rare exclusive television interview."
RC: "Michael, why was it important for you to be here and what do you think of the support of Rev. Sharpton?"
MJJ: "I think it's important to be here, I'm not just fighting for myself I'm fighting for all artists. Those…uh-great artists who pioneered, you know, entertainment business as well as songwriting as well as incredible staging, you know. The fact that they have been taken by the system. Totally broken them financially, you know, and this has to stop, it's a conspiracy."
RC: "You said out there that you felt that Sony was racist."
MJJ: "I didn't say SONY was racist, I said Tommy Mottola is racist."
RC: "Who is the head of Sony."
MJJ: "Yeah, Tommy Mottola."
RC: "Do you feel the recording industry as a whole has been used in a sort of conspiracy against black artists... why do you think this has happened?"
MJJ: "Why do I think this has? Because money is the root of evil."
RC: "Um, you also said out there that you believe... that you believe that Sony and the recording companies take black artists money... you brought up James Brown and some of these others at the end of their careers are broke and penniless."
MJJ: "Yeah..."
RC: "What is your financial situation?"
MJJ: "I'm in an incredible financial situation. I just wrote somebody a check for 500 million dollars. But good news doesn't sell - if it's something negative and that's a rumor, that's... that's when it's blasted! They don't expect the person to say anything good you know."
RC: "Well, one of your dreams is to do directing..."
MJJ: "Yes."
RC: "Well, what are some of the other things you want to do in your career?"
MJJ: "Uh... um… films… films. Making motion pictures. I have a movie coming out I'm directing. Uh... you know entertainment."
RC: "What do you think of Rev. Al Sharpton and why is his support so important at this time for you?"
MJJ: "Cuz he's an incredible orator and he is supported by uh… you know…the public and, and uh…Beautifully and he understands we need a mouthpiece. A voice for the voiceless, you know... and he's, he's the guy."
RC: "One other quick question... just because you're in New York... one of the frustrations of 9/11 was the charity album... just what are your thoughts about 9/11 when you're here in New York?"
MJJ: "I hated it. I'd hate it if it was anywhere."
Rita Cosby: "An emotional and very interesting Michael Jackson. And with the help of Rev. Al Sharpton he is taking on the head of Sony corporation, Tommy Mottola, as you just heard but no surprise.. Sony music corporation was outraged by Jackson's comments and they quickly issued a statement today calling his words quote "ludicrous" and "spiteful" they also said they were hurtful and they said it seems bizarre that Jackson has chosen to launch an ugly attack a music executive who has championed his career for many, many years."
