Interview with Steve Harvey (2001)
Friday, 01 June 2001
Steve Harvey: This is the single, best call ever on this radio station. This one is bigger than President Clinton calling, ladies and gentlemen, on the phone, put your hands together and show your love for the King Of Pop. Michael Jackson. Yo hear me, you don't hear me? You think I'm lying? You don't feel me watch what I say, hey Mike!
Michael:Steve?
Steve Harvey: How you doing playa?
Michael: Wow! How are you?
Steve Harvey:What's up brother? How you feel man?
Michael: I went to bed early so I could wake up and speak to you, I'm a very...really big fan of yours, like I told you I saw your show... the Kings Of Comedy? And you did a sketch about the Titanic and I thought that was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen in my life. Incredible!
Steve Harvey: Michael and I met.
Michael: In my trailer.
Steve Harvey: Yeah this year, he invited me.
Michael: On 'You Rock My World'.
Steve Harvey: Right, to 'You Rock My World'. I didn't come on air and tell anybody, 'cause I considered that you know, just a private thing between us. I didn't go out and go "Man I was in Michael Jackson's trailer". The brother invited me to his trailer. I met his kids. Great kids man! Michael, GREAT kids man!
Michael: Thank you very much Sir.
Steve Harvey: Can I pay you this compliment? Your kids didn't act like little rich kids.
Michael: Ok.
Steve Harvey: You know what I mean? I mean they had manners. They were real nice. I was playing ball with the little boy, and he didn't wanna stop. He just kept throwing me the ball, after a while I got into it like "Ah little Prince here you go I'm gonna throw you a hot one, catch it" Mike...
Michael: Yes?
Steve Harvey: Hey man, I cannot tell you man, how big this is for us to be here man.
Michael: Oh God bless you, you're just a great talent. You're really incredible. You're very funny, gosh, very funny, you got me screaming when I watch ...the thing I watch all the time, hehehe.
Steve Harvey: This is too funny, man. We was having a good time in his trailer man, just wanted to...really, really nice people man Really, really nice people in this business man, I got something else for you too Mike. I talked to your Personal Assistant...I got a new DVD out, I'm sending you that. You'll hear that today.
Michael: Oh cool! Oh thank you, thank you!
Steve Harvey: Oh, Mike Jackson on the phone. I don't even know what to ask him! Hey Mike I got one for you.
Michael: Yeah?
Steve Harvey: Lemme ask you this question. When you were performing on the 30th Anniversary Special, did you have an emotional moment when you and your brothers was on stage. `Cause there was this moment during this performance, and you kneeled down and you stayed there, and your brothers were looking at you like "Ok Mike, come on!" Was that real?
Michael: It's always real, and I take that moment and I pray not to cry, and I usually do. You know, because everything goes back to me, from conception you know to when we were little babies and children, and out to see of this all things. You know, the agitation and notoriety, and it's just a work from God, it all goes through me real fast, you know it's a blessing and I just break down and I cry at that moment. But I try not to show it to the audience and I just can't help it you know...
Steve Harvey: Well I saw that man. I thought that was real, you know I think man, that people when they see these things in you brother, that allows them to see a glimpse of the REAL Michael Jackson that often times only your closest friends get to see, and I thought that was a great moment man. I enjoyed that. That was my favorite part of the show. I said "If I ever talk to this bro I'm gonna ask him about it" that was hot man. That was hot. You know it's so much man that we could talk about, you know, your career and everything. Your sister called the radio station, Janet called (radio chat) first of all Michael, let me introduce you to my co-hosts on the show Shirley Strawberry and Dominique Deprima, cause they are busting to say hi.
Co-Hosts: Good morning Michael.
Michael: Good morning!
Co-Hosts: Hi Michael
Michael: How are you?
Co-Hosts: Great!
Michael: Oh great
Co-Hosts: We are such big fans (huge fans)
Michael: Oh thank you so much, oh...
Co-Hosts: I love your album, I really enjoy your album
Michael: Oh thank you very much
Steve Harvey: Yeah the new album Mike
Co-Hosts: We really love it, seriously.
Michael: Thank you so much
Co-Hosts: Break Of Dawn, I keep playing Break Of Dawn. I know (laughs)
Michael: Oh very...
Steve Harvey: Hey Mike, hey Mike listen to this we had the OJ's on the show Monday, and we were talking about your album, and OJs and this is Eddie LeVerge's take on your album. He said "Mike threw Rock My World out there at 'em" and then just said "Hold Up! Ya'll ain't seen nothing yet!" Then you dropped Butterflies, and Butterflies man, I'm telling you on this station right here, I play Butterflies at least twice a morning, and in four hours that ain't right on the radio.
Michael: Heh!
Co-Hosts: Sounds right to me!
Steve Harvey: Hey Mike, where did you get Butterflies from?
Michael: Well Butterflies is ...was these two girls and they came with the song and we .kinda worked together. It's mainly these other two girls who mainly composed that one, and I think they're British, they're British girls, they're black British girls. And they were just phenomenal, and I thought it was just something I really, really liked. We did some kinda counter, you know hooks and lines and painted it with different sounds and everything, different colors, and so we produced it and we produced it and just created something that was just acceptable and it ended up going on the album. I'll do at least over 100 songs until I come up with about 20-30 that I like, I cipher it down. You know.
Steve Harvey: Wow! A 100 songs before you come with 20-30 that you LIKE?
Michael: Yeah, it was actually more this time, more than 100...
Steve Harvey: Hey man, Mike, I know you ain't this type of brother, but I am, so I'm just gonna put it out real like this, but ever since you came back I told Usher and Sisqo to but his shirt back on "Put your shirt BACK ON, Mike is back! Take off that glove! The KING IS BACK baby!" Hey man, we have got over the years, all of us...your true fans Michael are still out there in the streets and I can't even tell you, I speak at prisons across the country often times, and I was at a prison detention center out here and one of the brothers that was locked away he says "Steve the love that you been giving Michael Jackson on the air, he say if you ever, ever talk to him, tell him that up in here man, we've been feeling his music for a LONG time"
Michael: Wow, that's beautiful...
Steve Harvey: Yeah that's a great compliment man to what you've been to people like for all this years man, I mean brother I don't know if anyone's ever said thank you to you for the way you put it down, for all of the music you gave us, that's still in our hearts man, I don't know if nobody ever said thank you to you man...
Michael: Oh god bless you, that's so beautiful, it's ...I appreciate that it's not easy being in my position because to create so much sensationalism and tabloids, people lie, they create rumors and stories, and none of it's true. And it's very difficult, it's not easy, it's very hard, and you end up...you hurt sometime and you try being resilient as possible, but it's very, very difficult, because there's tabloids who lie and they just hate that they're jealous. So when you read it, it's a lie, don't believe it, burn it, we should have a tabloid burning, we should have a tabloid burning, make a mountain out of them and just destroy them, they just hate to see us grow and build and build, there's nothing wrong with that, they can and it's ok, what should I do, you know, re-enforce the talent that God gave us... and that's all I wanna do, share the love and gift of entertainment, I don't wanna hurt anybody...
Steve Harvey: That's real and man, you know what man, I'm just gonna say this man, I talked with your mom off the air before through Jermaine, he and I had a conversation on the air and he called me off the air, and I was talking to your mother, Miss Jackson off the air.
Michael: She's wonderful
Steve Harvey: I told Miss Jackson, I said to her "a phenomenal job you've done in raising as many talented children that you have and still maintain them as a family", and she was thanking me because I had ..came forward on your behalf on more than one occasion, concerning several issues man, that were just totally false about you. And I prompted everybody to go out and get a copy of the GQ article from 1994. And GQ had a lot of back issues be ordered because of this, and a lot of people read the article and found out the real truth behind a lot of things that were so false man, and your mum was thanking me for saying that on the radio, and I just wanna say man, that there are lot of people out here man that really feel you playa, they just wish they could just feel you some more, and a phone call like this Mike, I gotta tell you...you go a long way man.
Michael: Well thank you so much, I don't do it often at all, I never do it, I never do it, this is the first. Well, for you, I'm happy to do it for you, I mean it's from the bottom of my heart, you've been so kind and wonderful to me, somebody...people used to tell me in different places, "There's this guy that talks about you every day" and I go "Who is it?"..."his name is Steve" and I go "Steve?" and then I saw the Kings Of Comedy show and I went "This is the guy and oh my God now I'm a fan of him now"
Steve Harvey: You gave me a call and it was real crazy cause like going to see Mike ain't no, you just don't walk up and go "Hey Mike, I'm here", you gotta go through some channels. And it was great man that you had me there, Hey Mike, listen can you tell us exactly what is Never Never Land? Can you clear that up for the listeners?
Co-Hosts: NEVERland
Steve Harvey: Neverland? Oh right there I thought it was Never Never Land...
Michael: Well that's ok too if you want to call it Never Never Land. It's just a serene and tranquil place to just relax and enjoy yourself, and leave your troubled mind and things that irritate you in your heart and in your soul behind, once you're in the gates, it's just a very wonderful, quiet, loving place, and where there's lakes and you know, rolling hills and grass and trees and rides and trains.
Steve Harvey: How big is it, Mike? How big is it, Mike?
Michael: It's 3000 acres.
Co-Hosts: Sounds like paradise!
Steve Harvey: 3000 acres? I got 70 acres in Texas and I thought I was king, I got 70 acres, you got 3000!
Michael: Well I get to compensate for the loss of the childhood I never got to enjoy, childlike things. It's just for everybody, we have handicapped kids with cancer, terminally ill children, leukemia kids, Make A Wish Foundation, Dream Street...we've been doing this for over 9, 10, 11 years...
Steve Harvey: Wow
Michael: Yeah and I did it before...we never wave a flag, we never try and get press support, I do it quietly, we've helped...by the busloads they come, we're not allowed cameras or videos but I do it quietly, cause this charity is from the heart, not to say "Look at me, look what I'm doing", but I do it quietly from the heart, I've been doing this for many years, many, many years... one day maybe you can meet me here and we can say hello?
Steve Harvey: You know that would be great, to everybody who's just tuning in we're interviewing live on the radio MICHAEL JACKSON, this is like a bomb, this is da bomb interview, this tops it for me, you know Mike I've had President Clinton call me from Air Force One before, and it did not have this impact, believe me cause Clinton's cool and everything
Michael: I really like him
Steve Harvey: He and Michael
(Steve Harvey laughs and sings some Michael songs, Michael goes into a fit of hysterics)
Steve Harvey: I got the King Of Pop on the floor, I am the King!, hey Mike man, lemme tell you something, you invited me to Neverland, but lemme tell you this, me and my wife have a foundation it's called the "Steve and Mary Harvey Foundation" and we've been trying to put together man you know there are so many children man out here in the LA districts that just don't have any books, they just do not have a book man, and with all the budget cuts that are going down man most of these schools are going down and they're just not getting an education, and for example Mike, I walked into classrooms with children in it, they had 38 children. 23 desks and 8 books, with 38 kids, 23 desks and 8 books...
Michael: Wow!
Steve Harvey: And it broke my heart man so I took some news cameras down there, so instead of having me coming down to Neverland, I mean it'd be great for me but if my foundation got together a bus of really really inner city kids that were real young and never been out of their neighborhood and never saw anything great, if I could arrange it through your people man, I'd pay for the bus and everything, if we could get a busload of kids...
Michael: You got it, we'll do it, that's what we do, I would be more than pleased and happy to do that, that's what we do...
Steve Harvey: You know what Mike, what I'll do is I'll put a little contest together on the radio and we'll go to the schools that have the least and cause these children man, if they had the chance to see something outside of their neighborhood, some of these have kids have never been to the beach out here, some of these kids have never been to Beverly Hills out here
Michael: Wow!...
Steve Harvey: If we could get that worked out man at the top of the year, my foundation would happily pay for the buses and lunches, I know you'll take care of my tab but...
Michael: Yeah of course
Steve Harvey: I think that'd be great. I think that'd be great.
Michael: Wow I'd love to do it.
Steve Harvey: Hey Mike, hey man, if you could say, the new album is out, it's called 'Invincible'
Co-Hosts: It's really good
Michael: Thank you
Steve Harvey: And he didn't call in to promote the album, this ain't what the call is about, it's just playa to playa, brother to brother, dog to dog.And he didn't call in to promote the album, this ain't what the call is about, it's just playa to playa, brother to brother, dog to dog.
Co-Hosts: We just want him to know we appreciate it, that's all, the good music he still makes is just as good as he was from years ago, we love it, we're big fans of you Michael. Big fans.We just want him to know we appreciate it, that's all, the good music he still makes is just as good as he was from years ago, we love it, we're big fans of you Michael. Big fans.
Michael: God bless you, thank you so much.
Steve Harvey: Hey man, that's the one thing man, that I want to get across to people is that the brother on the phone, has been a brother the whole time, in regardless of what you hear in the media, what you read about, the tabloids, they're garbage, they print stuff about everybody false all the time...just this guy right here is one of the nicest people in this business, and been that way a long time, and hasn't harmed a hair on anybody's head but people have gone out to him for monetary gains just to get money man... if you read the GQ article in 1994, get a copy of it, send off and read it with Michael Jackson on the cover, it will tell you this whole story and exactly what happened, and I mean it was very revealing, and I was stunned, but not really because I know how people are cause I only get a taste of it, and I ain't even Michael Jackson. Plus Mike, I'm dangerous, when you come near me I cuss and spit, I do all kinds...I got friends in low places. Hey Mike, if you need a couple of them friends just roll out there, you know I'm real Mike, if the tabloids are getting on your nerves we can get the tabloids billed and burnt down.
Michael: Good, we need to, we need to do it... we need to do it.
Steve Harvey: Let's be real Mike, I got some boys that can get over there, I'm talking about from low places. Let's be real Mike, I got some boys that can get over there, I'm talking about from low places.
Michael: Yeah they're disgusting, especially those ones that disguise themselves as legitimate and they're just tabloids at their worst.
Steve Harvey: Yeah I've read a couple of them newspapers too.
Michael: Yeah, they're worse. Yeah, they're worse.
Steve Harvey: Hey man, I think it's great for the masses to hear you, and man, every now and then Mike just gimme a call playa cos my interview with you is always this way, the morning show is motivational and uplifting, we are not here to tear nobody down, to poke fun, I've got a million jokes I can do about anything else, but I never get off into people's personal lives but you brother, you have meant a lot to people man.
Michael: Thank you so much. Thank you so much.
Steve Harvey: And I wanna say something to you special too man, cause a lot of people don't get this way too, but I gotta tell you something, you mean something to black people man, don't ever think you don't and you haven't.
Michael: Wow Wow
Steve Harvey: Cause you have really meant something to the minorities across this country man, and you remember that about your music man, you remember that about your videos. You touch us that way, and I'm giving you something from one brother to another that mainstream America can't give to you but it's what you have done in representing black people...
Michael: I'm proud of my heritage
Steve Harvey: Come on playa, say it...
Michael: I'm proud of it, I'm proud to black, I'm honored to be black, and I just hope that one day that they will be fair and portray me the way I really am, just a loving and peaceful guy wanting to make wonderful, unprecedented entertainment and songs and music and film for the world, you know that's all I wanna do, I am no threat, I just wanna do that, that's all I wanna do. I want to be a joy to the world.
Steve Harvey: You've been doing it man, you've been doing it, you've been doing it for a long time. I say it...Sisqo, Usher, put your shirt on (Michael laughs), Mike is back! The King Of Pop is BACK!
Co-Hosts: He's crazy Mike, he's crazy!
Steve Harvey: Michael Jackson, Steve Harvey, the Morning Show, we've got big love for you playa.Michael Jackson, Steve Harvey, the Morning Show, we've got big love for you playa.
Michael: I love you more. Lots more.
Steve Harvey: Hey brother, big love to you, call us again!
Michael: I love you all, thank you very much
Steve Harvey: Show your love, for the one and only King Of Pop...
Michael: I love you.
Steve Harvey: I love you too, guy...
